Early Gold Pear
Description
The Early Gold pear is an ultra hardy, early ripening variety developed as an improvement over the Ure pear. It is specifically valued for its ability to thrive in cold climates like the Canadian prairies, being hardy down to Zone 2. It produces medium sized, chartreuse to golden yellow oblong fruit which typically ripens in late August to early September, about 10–14 days earlier than the Ure pear and taste similar to the Ure or Bartlett varieties. The pears are sweet and refreshing with a crisp, very juicy white flesh and are excellent for fresh eating, baking, canning, and making preserves. Some sources describe it as self fertile, but its recommended to plant a second compatible pear variety such as Golden Spice or Summercrisp nearby to ensure a reliable fruit set. Plant in full sun for best yield.
