Flowering Crab
Chestnut Flowering Crabapple
Description
The Chestnut Crabapple is a highly regarded, cold hardy and disease resistant, large fruited crabapple variety, developed by the University of Minnesota in 1949. It is known for its sweet, crisp, yellowish flesh with a distinct, rich nutty flavor, making it a favorite for fresh eating, baking, and cider, rather than just jelly. It features large, fragrant white blossoms in mid spring that emerge from pink buds and light green leaves that turn golden yellow in the fall. This variety produces fruit roughly 2 inches in diameter with reddish bronze skin over a yellow background. They ripen in early September and can hang on the tree for several weeks. The flesh is yellow, crisp, and juicy with a complex sweetness that often wins apple taste tests. Requires a pollinator such as Kerr Crabapple for fruit production, and planting in full sun will help maximize yield.
